The role of fusion splicing in FTTP networks | IQGeo

Written by IQGeo | 06 November 2022

What is Fusion Splicing?

Fusion splicing is a method of joining two optical fibers end-to-end using a fusion splicing machine. The ultimate goal is to fuse two fibers together so that light passing through the fibers is not scattered or reflected back by the splice. The main question that comes up to one’s mind is why do we use splicing?

Fusion splicing plays a crucial role in fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) networks by providing a reliable and efficient method for joining optical fibers. With its ability to minimize light scattering and reflections at the splice point, fusion splicing is ideal for repairing broken fiber links and creating seamless connections within data centers and LAN environments. For example, it may be considered a viable solution for connecting 250-micron outside plant fiber to 900-micron inside plant fiber at the building entrance. Fusion splicing is the preferred method by planners and designers as it has a low optical loss range between 0.05-0.10 dB.

The advantages of fusion splicing

Fusion splicing offers flexibility, scalability, and interoperability between fiber plants in a networking system. But that is not all fusion splicing brings to the table. With a wide variety of applications, fusion splicing has advantages including:

  • Offering a lower variable cost per fusion splice

  • Low back reflections

  • High mechanical strength

  • Ability to withstand extremely hot temperatures

  • A compact and neat solution

  • Prevents dust and other contaminants from entering optical paths

  • Quick and worry-free

As technology continues to progress, the fiber optic industry will see the emergence of new requirements, technologies, and advanced software for designing network infrastructures. Fusion splicing is poised to gain even more popularity as it proves to be a reliable solution for meeting performance demands in applications requiring 5G, 25G, and beyond.

Crafting a focused FTTx strategy poses a significant challenge for telecom service providers as the future of fixed-line broadband connectivity leans towards 100% fiber. The right fiber technology can greatly enhance efficiency in building optimal infrastructures while effectively cutting down on both initial and long-term operational costs.
