DevOps Engineer

Ghent, Belgium

IQGeo is seeking a DevOps Engineer to play an integral role in supporting our global Engineering teams. This is the first such role in our Ghent office, hence there’s a real opportunity to make your mark. You'll be responsible for managing the infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines that support our products, both for our cloud services and on-premises products. This career-launching role will join a dynamic team that builds complex applications and products that utilize software, GIS, engineering, and problem-solving skills.

Our Engineering department, with teams located in Cambridge (UK), Denver (USA), Salt Lake City (USA), and Ghent (Belgium) is responsible for designing and developing our Geospatial products. As a DevOps Engineer, you will be a part of the Ghent R&D team, where you will be involved in the cloud deployment of our auto-design applications for planning Fiber and District Heating networks, and possible future extensions to other utility sectors (e.g., Smart Grids). The person in this role is expected to be capable of working independently, and as a team member, and should have experience working with complex software business and enterprise applications.

Responsibilities
  • You’ll join an international DevOps team as the first DevOps Engineer to work out of the Ghent office. This creates a unique opportunity to help shape our local processes and improve our ways of working.
  • You’ll be responsible for the infrastructure that supports our product portfolio and manage the pipelines to deploy these applications.
  • You’ll create Terraform (or similar IAC) modules that automate as much of the deployment as feasible, so we can rapidly deploy new releases to production or launch additional development environments.
  • You’ll play a critical role in protecting our production and development environments, by making sure the infrastructure is set up in a secure manner and by monitoring these environments for known vulnerabilities and applying security patches when required.
  • You’ll support the Engineering team in creating new software releases by integrating various tools and platforms into their development processes (e.g. SonarCloud, Snyk, CI/CD).
  • You’ll collaborate with Product Management and the rest of Engineering to design the right software architecture which maps seamlessly to a scalable infrastructure layer.
  • You’ll work in an Agile environment, where you have frequent meetings with co-workers throughout the development cycle.
Person Specification

You’ll be enthusiastic, with a strong technical background in general software engineering.

Essential

  • Experience of working in a DevOps role.
  • Excellent knowledge of infrastructure as code (e.g. Terraform), containerization (e.g. Docker), and container orchestration (e.g. Kubernetes).
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure provider platforms (e.g. Amazon Web Services).
  • Experience setting up and maintaining pipelines (e.g. Jenkins, GitHub Actions).
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, able to present technical concepts to others in Engineering.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.

Desired

  • Knowledge of Java and/or Python (as much of our product stack is written in these languages).
  • Knowledge of TypeScript (Angular) and HTML design and development.
  • Experience with Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) or web mapping.
  • Experience working in an Agile environment.
Education and Experience
  • Degree from an accredited university in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent industry experience.
Supervisory Responsibilities

None.
